Perfection Is Not Sexy

There’s nothing sadder than someone who tries just a little too hard. There’s a point when working on yourself no longer yields any improvements. One of the reasons I’m enjoying getting older is because I now know where that point is.

I wish I’d let go of the inclination to strive for perfection sooner. There is something utterly sexless about a person who tries to be perfect all the time. What I’m glad I’ve learnt is that when you strip away all the flaws you take away all the charm too.

There are habits I am genuinely glad I got rid of like smoking, biting my nails, and eating too much (or too little) — but vices that can be changed are not the same as flaws. Character flaws should be worked on; but not all physical ‘flaws’ are charmless.

A small sprig of greying hairs, curls that are never the same one day after the other, an extra pound or two too many, laughter lines, a few scars, moles or birthmarks, the habit of swearing just a little too much.

Whatever your imperfections are — they might just be the most appealing thing about you.
